Eerbeek, June 30, 2025 – Medicol®, the trusted sterilization paper produced by Coldenhove, is taking another step forward in its commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable future. Coldenhove, the paper mill behind Medicol®, is investing in an innovative electric boiler (E-Boiler) that will work alongside the existing steam boiler. This hybrid solution marks a significant milestone in reducing gas consumption and CO₂ emissions, while also helping stabilize the electricity grid.
Sustainability at the Core of Medicol®
For decades, Medicol® has been synonymous with safety and reliability in sterilization paper. Now, that commitment extends even further into sustainability.
“Reducing our ecological footprint is one of our highest priorities,” says Arnoud Roelandse, Director of Coldenhove. “The E-Boiler allows us to cut gas consumption and CO₂ emissions by around 20%, making Medicol® an even more sustainable choice for healthcare and industrial partners worldwide.”
Strengthening the Future of Sterilization Paper
The introduction of the E-Boiler not only benefits the environment but also reinforces the long-term availability and competitiveness of Medicol®. By reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing production efficiency, Coldenhove ensures that Medicol® remains a future-proof solution for sterilization packaging needs.
Supporting the Energy Transition
Beyond its direct environmental impact, the E-Boiler also plays a vital role in grid stabilization. “As renewable energy sources like solar and wind create fluctuations in supply, the E-Boiler can absorb peaks by converting excess electricity into heat,” explains Maikel Brummelkamp, Manager Operations at Coldenhove. “In this way, we not only support our production but also contribute to a more stable electricity grid and the broader energy transition.”
Looking Ahead
Installation of the E-Boiler is planned for the end of 2025. This investment represents a clear commitment: Medicol® and Coldenhove are not only dedicated to producing high-quality sterilization paper, but also to doing so in the most responsible and sustainable way possible.
